Using milk paint and chalk paint on furniture makes it fun and easy to bring some new attitude to a piece of furniture. There is a common misconception that all you need to do is wipe down the piece of furniture and start painting. However, it is important that you follow these simple steps to prepare your furniture before painting.
1-Prepare a mixture of 50/50 water and denatured alcohol
Clean the piece of furniture with a green scotch brite pad and a solution of ½ denatured alcohol and ½ water.
Spray and scrub thoroughly with the scotch brite pad trying to remove all the grit and grime. Dry off excess liquid with a paper towel. Let the piece of furniture air dry for two hours.
2-Lightly sand the surface with a 220 grit sanding pad
After the piece of furniture has dried, give it a light sanding with a 220 grit sanding pad. This is a light buffing, not a heavy duty sanding. You are not trying to remove the surface of the piece. You are just going to be creating a light white dust.
3-Wipe down the surface with a yellow tack cloth
Wipe down the surface of the piece of furniture with a yellow tack cloth to ensure it is smooth and clear of the white dust and any debris.
Once you have completed these steps, your piece of furniture is prepared to be painted.
Choose your paint and start painting. Have fun!
